NASA Awards Launch Services Contract to SpaceX Falcon 9 for NOAA’s JPSS-4 Mission

On behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA recently announced that they had selected SpaceX to provide launch services for the JPSS-4 mission, a mission part of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) program. This program includes multiple satellites that have the objective of enhancing Earth's observation capabilities. The program is a partnership between NASA and NOAA to study and monitor our planet. Going back to the start of the mission, the partnership within this program began with the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership.

According to NASA, the contract with SpaceX is a firm fixed price agreement valued at approximately $112.7 million, which covers launch services and related mission costs. The launch of the JPSS-4 mission is currently scheduled for 2027, which will use a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, launching from Space Launch Complex 4 at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This mission helps in NOAA's efforts in environmental monitoring and forecasting, which will help meteorologists to accurately give weather forecasts in our everyday lives.

The JPSS constellation of satellites helps collect data on Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land, supporting NOAA's mission to continuous environmental observation and prediction. Collecting these observations will aid them in understanding weather, climate, and other environmental changes, which will benefit the economy and public safety. Combined with the GOES constellation, this amount of data should account for nearly all the data used by meteorologists in creating daily forecasts and long-range weather models across the U.S. JPSS-4 will also carry NASA's Earth Venture mission, Libera, enhancing our knowledge of Earth's energy balance and climate change.
